WHAT WE DO

Presently we are working with 40 children/adult  having multiple disabilities out of which majority are deafblind. Being a deafblind poses great challenges before such persons as they stand deprived of vision, hearing and speech, all at a time. Their challenges are further aggravated due to other Neurological disorder like Autism, Mental Retardation, Cerebral palsy and also Physical Deformity present in them. This makes them completely vulnerable and dependent on others for basic functions and for life support too.  Thus for meaningful, comprehensive and effective rehabilitation of such persons various disability based activities/programs duly supported by infrastructure and facilities are required to be in place in a full fledge rehabilitation Centre.  With the limited resources Sahayogini has managed to plan and implement some of the major programs/activities as under:

Program I : Early Intervention/Early Education

AGE GROUP

5 months to 5 year old children for early intervention & up-to 13 years for Early Education. Children with Visual Impairment/Autism/SD/CVI/CP/MSI/DB are enrolled under this program.

ACHIEVEMENT

overall improvement in basic ADL skills. Understanding capacity and following commands improved.

PROFILE

This is a well-structured process of assessment, diagnosis and consultation about children. Under this program we begin with primary assessment of vision, hearing, intellectual capacity and physical capabilities of each child that helps in rolling out an effective individualized rehabilitation program for each child. Simultaneously, early education is also given which helps children to get prepared for the next level of living skills development.

ACTIVITY 

pre-literacy, concept development, simulation of vision, hearing activation, motor activity, Activity of Daily Living skills (ADL), pre-mathematics (quantitative aspect), identification of objects, differentiating between small, big, counting,

physical as well as mental growth and adoption of living skills

ACHIEVEMENT

overall improvement in basic ADL skills. Understanding capacity and following commands improved.

Program II : Transition

AGE GROUP

Children between 6 to 14 years with MR/CP/.

PROFILE

Process of transforming early childhood into a learning individual. Familiarizing children with post-school environment, ensuring necessary skills and services for smooth transition from school to adult life with as little interruption as possible. Transition goals and services are decided here.

ACTIVITY 

concept of writing, reading and communication receptive and expressive.

INTENDED BENEFITS

adaptability for school environment & preparing for normal school.

ACHIEVEMENTS 

growing potential for normal school education, improvement in palmer grasp and tripod grasp and also in communication skill.

Program III : Occupational Therapy

AGE GROUP

Children between 1 month to 18 years  and above on need basis

PROFILE

Basically a sensory integration –cum-stimulation unit focused to development and use of sensory organs. Concept of getting occupied with some activity by using sensory organs and other body parts mainly use of hands.

ACTIVITY 

sensory integration therapy, balancing exercise, hand & shoulder exercise, milestone hand function, swing therapy, concentration and sitting tolerance, independent walking exercise, sensory stimulation using vibrator, tactile activity.

INTENDED BENEFITS

To achieve overall improvement in activity of daily living skills like use of hands, legs and mouth, to enable to sit and stand maintaining proper balance. Improvement in concentrating on meaningful activity.

ACHIEVEMENTS 

seen significant improvement in sitting tolerance and walking stamina, improved concentration level from 0 to 10 minutes, slow but steady growth seen.

Program IV : Physiotherapy

AGE GROUP

Children between   1 month to 18 years and above on need basis.

PROFILE

Professionally managed unit fully   equipped with advance equipment like…… Children who are primarily diagnosed to have or likely to have   some sort of physical deformity are enrolled under this program.

ACTIVITY 

Tread Mill exercise, passive exercise, trampoline, cycling, stash ball, stretch exercise, sit-ups, active assisted exercise.

to facilitate proper and smooth body movements including walking, sitting and standing, improvement in neck control, joint softness & swiftness, starch

Program V : Speech Therapy

AGE GROUP

Children between 2 to 14 years and those above 14 years on urgent- need basis are enrolled under this program.

PROFILE

Vigorous therapeutic sessions and continuous follow-up is recommended for development of speech which shows good success ratio in children at early age.  However, holistic approach is needed to see that all such children/adult is given speech therapy regularly and effectively to develop speech/communication skills. Due to limited resources and financial constraint we are yet to set-up an independent full-fledged speech therapy Centre to cover all the children under this Program.

ACTIVITY 

Oro motor exercise with facial massage, tadoma technic, grooming activity, drolling exercise, high pitch voice practice, articulation speech therapy, breathing exercise, language development.

INTENDED BENEFITS

Development of speech skills so as to be able to speak and express.

Program VI : Pre-Vocational/Vocational

AGE GROUP

children of 14 years and above are enrolled under this program.

PROFILE

Besides special education they require to be trained to work on some meaningful activity with precision.  Initially hands-on practical training is given so as to achieve precision in the given trade. This is pre-vocational stage.  Idea is to make marketable items to generate revenue for them in the next stage that is Vocational.

ACTIVITY 

Agarbatti making and packing, artificial jewelry- mala making, fancy/simple paper bags making. Candle making on festive occasions.

INTENDED BENEFITS

to develop entrepreneurship in them so that they can earn their livelihood independently or collectively where each one of them can contribute equally or proportionately.
